Referring to your letter dated the 8th January 1896,

I have the honour to enclose the valuation of the securities

held against the note issue of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking

Corporation as on the 3rd instant, for communication to the

Lords Commissioners of the Treasury.

It will be observed that an excess is shown over the

amount required to be retained.

I have also to acknowledge the receipt of your letter

No.1845/98-9 of the 27th instant respecting a special issue of

notes for one year from July last in excess of the existing

limit of $10,000,000 which, we observe, is to be covered by a

deposit of dollars in the local Treasury.
